Bright colors tie the house together as a whole and this vintage gumball machine is loved by all. She found the architectural pieces at thrift and antiques stores to add layers of cottage style. “It’s more interesting to have architectural-salvage elements rather than one big picture on the wall,” Sharon says. She hung architectural-salvage pieces on the large wall. Her mom used to fill it with candy for her grandkids. She purchased it in the 1980s at an antiques mall. The massive wood piece is a Hoosier cabinet (they were often used as pantries when they were designed many years ago). This loft houses children’s chairs that Sharon collected for their cute country cottage architectural design. Because she removed the doors, these cabinets are now decorative focal points for her colorful cottage style accessoies. Sharon, a fan of typography, frequently makes her own wall art. “We installed travertine stone on the kitchen floor and engineered plank wood floors in place of the carpeting throughout the rest of the house,” Sharon says. When Sharon and her husband moved into their newly built four-bedroom house in Redlands, California, the walls were white and the floors were carpet and linoleum. With a large family, it was very important to me that everyone had a comfortable place to sit together. Sharon stacked baskets from thrift stores and made the draperies with a cream-colored linen. Roses from her English cottage garden are on the coffee table in a vintage milk glass from a thrift store. Sharon painted the bottom and left the top stained. The trestle table was $40 at a thrift store. The coffee table was found in a dumpster. She also painted the little buffet gray-green (she mixed colors together) and white, leaving the top stained. It was dark, so Sharon stripped it and painted it to look timeworn. In a crucial step, Libby’s first graduate student, Ernest C. He further developed the concept with members of his research group and published more in Science in 19. Libby proposed the idea of carbon dating in the journal Physical Review in 1946. That means half the atoms in a sample will change into other atoms, a process known as “decay,” in that amount of time. Carbon-14 has a half-life of about 5,730 years. Libby built upon the work of Martin Kamen (PhD’36) and Sam Ruben, who discovered the carbon-14 isotope in 1940. That includes pieces of animals, people, and plants, but also paper that was made from reeds, leather made from animal hides, logs that were used to build houses, and so forth.Ĭarbon dating was invented in the late 1940s by Willard Libby, a chemistry professor at the University of Chicago and former Manhattan Project scientist. Radiocarbon dating can be used on any object that used to be alive. ![]() ![]() A newer, faster method developed in the 1970s works by using a particle accelerator to count the atoms of carbon-14. Libby and fellow chemists at the University of Chicago and other institutions developed techniques to purify a sample so that it emits no other type of radiation except for carbon-14, and then run it through a detector sensitive enough to accurately count the pings emitted by the decay of single atoms. By measuring how much carbon-14 remains, scientists can estimate how long a particular organic object has been dead.įrom there, the problem becomes how to measure the carbon-14. Once they die, the absorption stops, and the carbon-14 begins very slowly to change into other atoms at a predictable rate. Living organisms absorb this carbon-14 into their tissue. When cosmic rays reach Earth’s upper atmosphere, physical and chemical interactions form the radioactive isotope carbon-14. It starts with cosmic rays-subatomic particles of matter that continuously rain upon Earth from all directions. Radiocarbon dating was also instrumental in the discovery of human-caused climate change, as scientists used it to track the sources of carbon in the atmosphere over time. Carbon dating has helped us reveal how our bodies work, to understand the climate of the Earth and reconstruct its history, and to track the sun’s activity and the Earth’s magnetic fields. ![]() The breakthrough introduced a new scientific rigor to archaeology, allowing archaeologists to put together a history of humans across the world, but it had a significant effect in other fields, too. The technique was developed in the late 1940s at the University of Chicago by chemistry professor Willard Libby, who would later receive the Nobel Prize for the work. Scientists can estimate how long the organism has been dead by counting the remaining carbon-14 atoms. When they die, the carbon-14 starts to change into other atoms over time. It is based on the fact that living organisms-like trees, plants, people, and animals-absorb carbon-14 into their tissue. The invention of radiocarbon dating elegantly merged chemistry and physics to develop a scientific method that can accurately determine the age of organic materials as old as approximately 60,000 years. Do you love it? Are you bored of seeing subway tile all over the place (I thought I was… and then of course I put it all over our house. What are subway tiles? A style of white glazed ceramic tile, as used on the walls of the New York City subway stations in the early twentieth century. In case you’re looking for them, here are the other kitchen posts on designing our IKEA kitchen, installing the cabinetry, choosing our marble-lookalike quartz countertop, and installing slim gold hardware. Feels really good to have one space in the house that is so close to the finish line. Other than that though, I think we’re just about there with the kitchen. (I also photoshopped out the white vent cover below the sink in this photo – so much better). What do you think? I’m pretty sold on the idea. I have very crudely photoshopped it in in the photo below. Rather than painting it a more subdued white, I was actually thinking of potentially going grey (similar to the cabinet colour). The white trim around the window is waaaaaay too white now compared to the backsplash. Spray paint the white vent cover below the sink cabinet grey. Installing our range hood and custom box to cover up the exposed ductwork above the stove. I really like how they extend to the ceiling, helping to bring the eye up and make it look like a really polished space. The white of these tiles almost perfectly matches our white IKEA cabinets and look great next to the countertop. We had our tile guy put these up, all the way to the ceiling with a plain white edging and medium grey grout. The white won out, as I felt like the kitchen might come off as TOO grey if the whole backsplash was grey, along with the lower cabinetry and stainless steel appliances. Ultimately I chose some of the longer white tiles – the “Manhattan” 4×12 tiles in white by FAP (I purchased them through Euro Tile & Stone here in Ottawa). I liked the longer look, and they have a cool glazed texture that was different from the usual uniform look on subway tiles. I liked the simplicity and that it wouldn’t steal the show from the other elements going on in the kitchen. What can I say? Clearly the reason why so many people like subway tile is that it is just a classic choice. I also realized that I didn’t like anything too small as I didn’t want to see too many grout lines.Īs much as I wanted something other than subway tile (I felt like that was too predictable), I ended up down to two choices: an elongated white subway tile and a grey subway tile. The marble tiles also got nixed as the veining was too strong next to the veining in the countertop. Grey is sort of like white in that there are so many tones behind the colour and if you get two that aren’t in the same “family”, they can look awful. Some of the grey ones clashed with the grey of the lower cabinetry and so got veto’d. Some of the white ones got knocked out quickly because they really didn’t match the white of the cabinets (making them appear more yellow). I laid them all out along the countertop and just lived with them for a while. I really didn’t have a clear vision of what I wanted. ![]() Some grey, some white, some large, some small. Once we found our marble lookalike quartz countertop, I brought home a zillion samples for backsplash. Kind of like how you don’t want to wear a skimpy top with short shorts- you need to pick where you’re going to show off the goods, you know? Subway Tile Backsplash I didn’t want pattern + pattern – too busy for me. In the earlier stages of kitchen planning, I kept flip flopping between either going with a marble tile backsplash (more affordable than one big slab) and plain countertop, or a countertop with veining and a more plain backsplash. ![]() The cost of that option though, was totally out of the budget. I love the strong veining and the impact it has on a room. ![]() My dream backsplash is one large slab of marble (like this, and this).
